Why should you start a budget?

Setting up a budget is critical if you don’t want to spend your way into future financial problems. You’re committing yourself to managing your money instead of letting your money manage you. You may find it helpful to see how you’re spending right now. Keep a note pad for a week and write down all the money you spend, including the dollar for a pop and the change for a snack. Sit down and add it all up at the end of the week and the numbers may shock you. Without a plan the small one or two dollar expenses really add up. When you manage your money you know what you can afford before you spend and there’s no surprise’s at the end of the month.

OK, where do I start?

First you will need to decide how you want to begin tracking your budget. You can use a program, make your own spreadsheet, or just use a pencil and paper. How you decide to track your budget is up to you, the key is making it a habit. Set aside 15 minutes a day to work on your budget, you may find that you only need a few minutes some days and you need 30 minutes on others. (more…)

Affordable Living Concept #1 – Pass It Onto Your Kids

Published: Feb 6th, 2010 | Author: morgan Add Comment

The other day, my son asked, “Mom, is going to a movie this weekend in our budget?” And I had one of those moments where I think, “Maybe, just maybe I’m doing something right, here.”

Budgeting for kids is an essential part of affordable living for your family. One key thing we do in our family to teach our boys about the joys and blessings of affordable living is to help them live by their own budgets and understand ours. Here are three key elements to the concept of budgeting for kids in our home.

We give weekly allowances that each of our two boys can use to budget for saving, giving and spending. Allowance is a beautiful thing because I am no longer the perpetual bad guy. When my 5th-grader expresses an interest in a new video game, he’s not really asking me. Because it’s his money he’s talking about. So instead of granting or denying permission to buy the game, I’m helping him think through HIS spending choices. (more…)

7 Ways to Save $100 Per Month

Especially during these volatile market days, saving for retirement is not always easy. There are bills to pay, clothes to buy, movies to see and a long list of many other things that can easily get in the way.

With this in mind, I wanted to point out a few ideas on how to save $100 per month. If it doesn’t sound like saving this amount would equate to much, over time it can really mean much more than you most likely think.

Let’s suppose you invest $100 every month, and let’s also assume you invest it into a stock index fund that earns an average return of 8% per year (which, judging by the latest financial headlines is a bit unbelievable, but let’s just be a bit optimistic here for historical purposes). Before revealing the results, note the emphasis on “index fund.” This is important to highlight because when investing in an index such as the S&P 500, not only do you get some degree of diversification, but you’ll also keep the fees you pay and the taxes you owe to a minimum as well. Take a look at these tips to quickly turn your money-related stress into easy budget revisions and opportunities to save.

Shave Away Everyday Expenses – Haircuts

So you like money, but you also want to keep or even improve your everyday lifestyle. I know the feeling and sharing my ideas and tips with you to save and make us all some money! Well here is a small investment that will pay for itself over a relatively short period of time.Buy your own hair shaver / clippers.

This is a simple but effective tip, you wont need to go to the barbers again! Saving yourself some cash every month. I don’t know much about which brand you should go for, but personally I have a Remington hair clippers which works perfectly. I suggest opting for a well known brand, and it should serve you well.

Anyway, the one trick here is knowing what haircut you want, and being able to cut successfully yourself (or perhaps with the aid of a friend or family member). My haircut is a “2 all over” which is reasonably easy to do, I just try my best to imitate what the barber did, but “tidying up” my hair after the 2 can be tricky, such as at the neck and temples, I generally want those areas trimmed down shorter than a 2, so my hair does not look roughly cut, but nice and shaped, and professional, as if a barber did it. I get a family member to do those tricky parts, and this little tip is great to know and practice. (more…)

How to Look Fabulous on a Minuscule Budget

I love clothes, simply love them. If I could buy out Vivienne Westwood, Christopher Kane and Fornarina every season, I would. Have you SEEN the new Christopher Kane Collection for Topshop? SWOON, my dears, total SWOON. If there’s ever a reason to be proud of being Scottish Christopher Kane is it. I digress, I love clothes, and who doesn’t want to look their very best and save a bit of money at the same time? I am QUEEN of bargain shopping, and I’m going to pass on what I’ve learned to you.

Spend money on that which you will wear constantly: By that I mean, don’t skip on necessity. For example, I went to Glasgow University, where it is incredibly wet. So I spent 80 quid on Doc Martens (which I totally adore) for everyday tramping about to and from uni, and since I wore them for 4 year at uni and at they are just on their last legs now in 2009 having bought them in 2002 I’d say that was money well spent. Personally a pair of sturdy AND beautiful boots is money well spent, as is a good quality gorgeous coat. Think really hard about what it is that you will need, and invest in a quality item that will last a long time and that you (crucially) adore. (more…)

Tips on Saving Dollars

Retail Banks will market convenience and you will pay dearly for one stop shopping. It is wise as consumers to be a customer at more than one bank. The big banks offer free checking and that is really all they are good for. Their savings accounts don’t pay interest worth mentioning. In fact, none of their interest bearing accounts will amount to much as far as interest is concerned.

I have been in the banking industry for many years. The customers with the most money saved actually took the time to shop interest rates. They moved their money around to the banks that offered the most attractive rates. No one at Wells Fargo wants to discuss CD rates with you because they are so terrible. Their savings accounts are the same way. However there are community banks that are paying better interest for savings accounts, money markets and CDs. (more…)
